Children of Men

Written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron of Y Tu Mama Tambien fame (and, okay, let’s just throw in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Children of Men is a brilliant, well-made film about a world where people are infertile and are unable to produce any children. Starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore, the film is intense, terrifying, sad, action-packed, unpredictable and yet so beautifully-shot that you can’t emerge out of that theater without thinking that your ten bucks was well worth it.
Once again, Clive Owen proves that he is a versatile actor. It’s not just Owen, though. Moore impresses with her slightly cameo role. That gives away a lot already, but I mean, you’d think Julianne Moore [hello, The Hours?] would be taking on roles that required more than just fifteen minutes of screen time. Michael Caine was a star in this movie, though. As Owen’s character’s hippie friend, Caine was just entertaining. He steals every scene he’s in. I loved the part where he goes, “Go on. Pull my finger.”
Another great actor in the movie was Chiwetel Ejiofor [Love, Actually and Kinky Boots]. He is extremely versatile. He’s played a cross-dressing diva, an assassin and Keira Knightley’s significant other. That takes a lot of work! In this movie, though, Ejiofor proves that he can stand against such great acting caliber that Moore, Owen and Caine present.
Overall, I highly recommend this film. Indulge your inner pessimist once in a while, yes?
